Shiny Happy Art Escape to Montville - 8-10 MAR 2019 (DEPOSIT)
There's something magical about an art retreat :)
Escape from your daily routine and explore art with like-minded people. Create. Learn. Socialise. Relax.
Friday 8 March – late Sun 10 March 2019 (with options to add Thursday and/or Monday)
At Montville – just two and a half hours drive from Toowoomba.
A deposit of $150 is required to reserve your place. Prices are listed below.
Seven 2-bedroom apartments have been reserved... in fact that's the whole Mountain View building at Montville Holiday Apartments - just for us!
Four apartments are on Level 1 with views from the balcony and chairs on the shared verandah.
Three apartments are on the ground floor, also with great views and room for all of us to gather on the deck.
Each self-contained unit has a queen bed in Room 1, and two single beds in Room 2.
Because we've reserved the whole building there's plenty of room
– and plenty of scope for socialising. True retreat style.
You can choose a single occupant bedroom, or choose twin share bedrooms with a fellow participant (which will reduce the price for your package). Due to availability, it will not be possible to book a whole apartment for one person.
Please choose your room preference when booking, and we'll be in touch to get more details.
We will designate one of the ground floor apartments as our central venue for socialising and group painting.
What we'll do:
I’ll guide the group through the basics of composition, tone, perspective and colour mixing during this ‘long weekend’ retreat. You can expect to make good progress on up to 3 or 4 x A3 watercolour paintings during our ‘house’ sessions, as well as lots of sketching practice in pencils (and maybe watercolour) on location. I'll be focussing on watercolours this retreat, so while you're welcome to bring acrylics, my demonstrations will be in watercolour.
Who this is for:
This weekend retreat will suit beginners through intermediate to experienced artists. My Wednesday Wonderers, previous retreat artists and subscribers to Shiny Happy Drawing or Shiny Happy Colour will feel suitably extended by the projects I have developed. Less experienced artists will be supported and encouraged (however, I do recommend completion of the Shiny Happy Drawing Online course to get some 'miles on your pencil' before we go).
What to bring:
Supplies won't be crazy and I'll reconfirm in January. There will be some supplies available to buy from me on location
- drawing pencils;
- watercolour pencils;
- small watercolour pan set (artist quality, colours to be confirmed in January);
- sketchbook (I prefer a A5 or A4 X-Press It Mixed Media Journal);
- a single sheet of Arches 300gsm watercolour paper (we'll make accordion fold journals out of it)
- permanent and non-permanent marker pens (at least one of each in black - I prefer 0.8 and 2 width tips)
- a folding stool or chair will be handy.
Numbers are limited, so check out our fabulous program, and register your interest straight away.
If you choose to arrive early (with an added day of accommodation), then this is your day to explore Montville. It's a full free day as 'formal' tuition only starts on Friday afternoon.
Relax... and settle into your apartment; check out the art galleries and shops.
You are responsible for your own meals and snacks.
If you're arriving on Friday - arrive as early as you like because I'll already be there - sketching! Linda will also be there to greet you. Settle into your apartment and take the time to wander off to get photos, start sketching, look at the nearby Montville shops or just go for a walk! You have free time till 3:00pm.
I'll guide a sketching session near our accommodation in the late afternoon - with pre-dinner snacks provided. BYO drinks.
After a shared catered dinner on Friday evening, I’ll take you through the basics, and do a demonstration painting for you. We’ll do some more practice sketching and colour mixing too.
On Saturday morning you are encouraged to visit the Montville markets for breakfast and shopping... and sketching! (markets open at 7:30am). We'll meet together at about 10:30 to share our sketches. Then we’ll head off to do sketches and watercolour on location… but we’ll travel light with our pencils, travel watercolours and sketchbook. We’ll look at tones, values, shapes and colours. You’ll find the scenes that appeal to you and take reference photos.
A light lunch will be shared at the main house, then we’ll spend the afternoon converting our sketches into watercolour paintings in our accordion books. I’ll be there to help you along the way.
After dinner together at a nearby restaurant (own expense), we'll share our day’s paintings and offer suggestions so that we all learn from each other. I’ll also show you how you can turn your sketches and watercolours into a more finished work.
On Sunday morning you can sleep in, or the early risers can walk, sketch or paint, and then after breakfast, we’ll head out to get last minute sketches or to check colours in our paintings.
After a shared lunch, we'll do a final review with more hints, and then you can leave for home when it suits you - unless of course, you have booked to stay an extra night!
If you would like to stay until Monday, please let us know on the booking form, so accommodation can be arranged. Monday is a free day - to relax, to sketch and paint, or just go shopping :-)
Meals supplied include: Breakfast on Sunday; 2x Lunches (Sat and Sun); 1x Dinner (Friday) plus morning/afternoon teas.
